Listen, Learn, and Live

ICRJ’s “Listen, Learn, & Live” program is an innovative effort to build bridges of understanding among people of different cultures and faith traditions by stressing “emotional” as well as “intellectual” tolerance.

What "Listen, Learn, & Live" Is All About:

In Macomb County and all throughout the metropolitan Detroit region, one's neighbor is increasingly different. Not everyone was born or grew up here - not just in our neighborhood, city, or state, but even in our country. With such difference we sometimes are afraid of our neighbor, often with unfounded worries and concerns about them because we do not know them, their culture, or their religion. Subsequently, we may struggle to embrace diversity as much as we sometimes fear change.

In an effort to foster understanding and openness to other cultures and faith traditions, the Interfaith Center for Racial Justice (ICRJ) has developed an introductory program: "Listen, Learn, & Live" that provides opportunities to broaden people's views, knowledge, and experiences of other ways of life.

Since its launch in February 2007, over 750 people have participated in this unique opportunity. In 2012, the ICRJ will offer four month-long modules: March - Jews and Judaism; April - Islam and Muslims; May - The Indian Community and Hindus; and, June - The Hmong Community. In addition, for the second consecutive year, the ICRJ will organize pulpit exchanges beginning in February (Black History Month) between White and Black clergy and their respective congregations.

Unlike a dialogue program whose goal is to bring people together in conversation, the "Listen, Learn, & Live" program invites faith-based, business, and educational groups to take a few hours out of the upcoming year to listen to and learn from the experiences and perspectives of one of the diverse groups of people who share our region.

Participants are required to attend all five sessions of the module since each session builds on the previous session.

There is a discount given to participants from ICRJ member organizations and to those who wish to attend all four modules.

Those interested can earn credit towards a Cultural Competency Certificate through Macomb Community College.
